The year 2023 witnessed several high-impact activities at the Office of the ADTCS:

The Centre of Human Resources Development provided several opportunities for staff members to advance their knowledge and skills through in-house and external training programs:
The essence of summer training or industrial placement is to apply acquired scientific knowledge to everyday practical experiences. Not only does this exercise equip students with a new set of skills but it also introduces them to real-life work conditions and maximises opportunities on the job market. Student training is a compulsory component in some degree programmes such as, applied chemistry, computer science and medical physics, necessitating the involvement of the Student Training Committee to seek out training opportunities that best meet the stipulated degree requirements. Students in other degree programs usually make their own initiatives to secure training opportunities.
The chart below shows a summary of training opportunities for students during 2022/2023. The places providing the largest numbers of training opportunities to our students were: Royal Air Force of Oman, Food Safety & Quality Center, Daleel Petroleum Company, CGG Services, United Integrated Lababrotories, Lonestar Alpha Laboratories, Code Academy, Ministry of Defense, Engineering Village, ALS Arabia Biyaq, and various government institutions.

The Physics Department had a lead in moving, since 2018, towards student-centered learning pedagogies to better engage our students. Several courses are now implementing active learning strategies in some form or another, ranging from large courses (PHYS2101, PHYS2102, PHYS2107, PHYS2108, PHYS3103, PHYS240) to smaller courses (PHYS3104 and PHYS3106). It is gratifying that more faculty members are experimenting with active learning strategies in their upper-level courses, including some postgraduate courses (PHYS6001).
Successful research collaborations often end with positive results. Dr. Noor Alhuda Al-Saqri secured an agreement with Prof. Henini (University of Nottingham, UK) in August 2023 to generously donate two systems, namely DLTS and a Solar Cells Simulator, for her electrical lab characterization at SQU. The combined value of these systems exceeds 50,000 OMR. This donation will enhance collaboration within SQU and other institutions.
The world is changing and thanks, in large part, to the impact of technology on societies and the workforce. This demands more skills from our graduates. As such, The Department assembled a “Future Team” tasked at restructuring the current Physics degree program to better cater to skills required by the modern workforce (critical thinking, analysis, teamwork and communication), in addition to inclusion of future technologies, such as machine learning, data science, quantum computing within our curriculum. The Future Team has started its brainstorming sessions, a first step in its efforts to accomplish this highly non-trivial task.
The Department is lucky to be successful in having some of its members promoted on a yearly basis. This year we had two successful promotions to the Associate Professor level: Dr. Abey Issac and Dr. Nidhal Sulaiman. Congratulations to both on their well-deserved promotions.

The Department of Statistics (DOS) came into existence in the year 2018 following an executive order of his excellency the Vice Chancellor that resulted in the splitting the then, Department of Mathematics and Statistics (DOMAS) into two departments, Department of Mathematics and Department of Statistics.
The department offers programs leading to the award of Bachelor of Science in Statistics (BSc. Statistics), Master Science in Statistics (MSc. Statistics) and Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics (PhD. Statistics). A general minor in Statistics is also offered to students of other majors at the College of Science.
All these programs were in place prior to the existence of the department, so a bit of history is in order. The bachelor degree in Statistics started 1993, together with degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science, under the then department of Mathematics and Computing (DOMAC). The Department of Computer Science became a separate department in September 1995, and DOMAC became the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (DOMAS). The other statistics programs that started under the DOMAS are the minor in Health Statistics (1998), Master of Science in Statistics (1999) and PhD in Statistics (2010).
Currently, the Department of Statistics is with 14 staff members and over six hundred student registrations per semester. The department offers programs leading to BSc., MSc. and PhD. in Statistics. A general minor in Statistics is offered to students of other majors in the College of Science. The department is committed to quality teaching, research and community service. It aspires to:
The Department of Statistics provides two service courses: Probability for Engineering (STAT2103) for the BSc students in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Statistics Data Science (STAT6600) for the MSc students in the Data Science and Machine learning program in the Computer Science department. Further, a part of our degree program is taken by other majors for Statistics background deemed necessary by their departments.

The importance of Statistics has been acknowledged worldwide, and 20 October 2010 was the first World Statistics Day to celebrate the numerous contributions and achievements of statistics in our lives. Since then, World Statistics Day was set to be celebrated every five years.
In October 2023, the Department of Statistics Celebrated the Statistics Day for the second time. The event was organized by a Departmental Promotion Committee, chaired by Dr. Maryam Al Alawi with Dr. Moh'd Alodat and Dr. Ronald Wesonga as members of the committee. The day's main attraction was a seminar with the presentation of papers and posters by the academic staff and the postgraduate students. Several researchers from different organizations in Oman also presented papers at the seminar. The event gathered professionals and practitioners of statistics from more than ten organizations, such as: SQU, SQUH, the National Center of Statistics and Information, GCC Statistical Center, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, National University of Science and Technology, Smart Tech Oman, and DataMining Company, which was also the sponsor of the event, The event was a resounding success, and a pleasant gathering, that hold potentials of further collaborations between the department and the other institutions.

The postgraduate programs, MSc. and PhD. in Statistics were reviewed by The Quality Assurance Office (QAO) during October 2023.
At the College of Science, it’s a requirement for students to major and minor in a programme of study by undertaking required courses. The Department of Statistics organized a special meeting on 19 October 2023, where the new STAT Major students were welcomed and inducted into the necessities for them to succeed, academically as well as professionally. Thanks to Dr. Iman Al Hasani for her tireless efforts in ensuring that this occasion was a success. The theme of the session was "Partners in Statistics."

STATGROUP held the first Statistical Forum from 27 February to 1 March 2023 under supervision of Dr. Iman Al Hasani. The forum was inaugurated by Dr. Talal Al Hosni, the Dean, College of Science who was accompanied by the HoD, Department of Statistics.

The STAT Forum targeted students from universities, colleges and schools. They focused on introducing the basic concepts of data collection and analysis with participation of four statistical consulting companies: Data mining, Muscat statistical consulting, Bahthy platform and Alfikar statistical consulting.

The STATGROUP with the help of the data mining company collected visitors' opinions about the forum and they received about 196 responses. They received positive feedback about the forum decorations and the valuable statistical information that they introduced and shared with the public. The availability of the statistical companies attracted visitors as well and broadened knowledge about statistics. The students also appeared on different news media.

The STATGROUP designed a short video about the history of statistics and how it developed over the years. The video has been requested by one of the schools who visited the forum to be shared with their students. The video was shared with the public through the college events screen, the departmental website and social media.

Statistics graduates: Yusuf Al Darmaki, Khalid Al Rahbi and Faisal Al Aisaee designed an Arabic video illustrating the concept of Opinion Mining and Sentiment Analysis for Arabic Tweets. The video was published in Zenodo [ https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7792563] on 2nd April 2023. Al Aisaee.F, Al Darmaki.Y and Al Rahbi.K undertook Twitter sentiment analysis with application in Arabic tweet text as a research project for their Bachelor final year

project of Statistics major. The project was
jointly supervised by Dr. Iman Al Hasani and co-
supervised by Dr. Hamza Zaidoom in 2019. The
study focused on Arabic tweets about the unemployment issue in Oman, using a trending hashtag on this topic at that time.

STATGROUP collaborated with Muscat Statistical Consulting and organized a workshop on Data Analysis using SPSS for Statistics major students. The workshop was held in two days 10th and 11th July 2023. The founder and CEO of the Muscat Statistical Consulting presented the workshop.

Training and capacity building is one of CAARU’s main objectives hence. Several customized training programs are conducted in the unit for either students, graduates, or staff. This year, around 24 SQU staff participated in three-day workshops on ICP-OES and SEM, organized in collaboration with the Centre of Human Resources Development (CHRD). In addition to these workshops, various training programs were conducted to meet the needs of different groups, including graduate training, on-the-job training, and NMR software training. Also 3 Training Programs were conducted in CAARU through Centre for Community Service and Continuing Education.
The unit has successfully achieved most of its 2023 operational plan in terms of securing the required budget for instrumental repair, upgrade and PM, that has been pending since 2020 hindering the smooth operation of the unit. That has helped in the marketing plan and attracting new customers and this was clear from the number of services provided including sample analysis and training, in addition to the generated revenue.
Maintaining high standard service and continues development will defiantly enhance CAARU’s ability and visibility in the market to serve industry as well as other academic institution across the country.
